App of the month: Stellenbosch Facilities app

Education is a critical component, if not the most critical component of individual, national and global development.

But entering University can be an overwhelming experience for first year students, as they’re bombarded with information and sometimes battle with even the simplest thing like finding their lecture venue across a number of campuses.

Stellenbosch University

Stellenbosch University, home to 28 thousand students per year, and an employee of more than three thousand staff, situated across five different campuses, was faced with this exact problem. First year students, newly introduced to the maze of lecture halls and rooms were often getting lost on their way, making them late for class, while even the most experienced of students were sometimes left perplexed as they needed to write examinations in venues they were not familiar with. Further, student security has been an ongoing concern for both management and students. The 4i team set about to find a workable, effective solution that could easily be rolled out to students and staff. Working closely with the University’s Facilities Management team, 4i developed an incredibly useful mobile application for both iOS and Android devices.

With building floor maps included in the mapping system, students can easily filter between different floor levels to find where they need to be once inside a building.

The App

The mobile application includes an intuitive campus map that uses Google Maps, enabling students to easily find the campus building or lecture room they need to. The addition of an Augmented Reality layer makes it even easier for students to figure out where they need to go. Students need only open the app and hold up their device to their surroundings, and they’ll be presented with building or landmark names, making it super easy to find where they need to go. Keeping Students Connected and On the Move

Of course, using up all their mobile data while trying to find their lecture room would be awful for students, so the mobile application helps students by highlighting exactly where they can find WiFi facilities across the different campuses. The Shuttle Map, on the other hand, includes GPS co-ordinates of each shuttle stop and lists departure times for each.

Useful Information

The mobile application also includes an integrated examination timetable, directing students to their examination venue, simply by clicking on the examination details. And if students need any type of assistance, there’s an easy click-to-call emergency number that puts them directly in touch with on-campus security services.

But what do the students think about it?

The Stellenbosch University mobile application has proven to be the ideal solution for students, staff and management. Not only did it raise the profile of the University’s Facilities Management services but also students were left impressed by the foresight and good thinking that went into the app’s creation. One anonymous student quipped, “It is so easy, even drunk students can use it.”
