The 4i Breakfast Club21 February 2017 ‐ 5 min read
At 4i, just as our website tells you, we’re ‘centred on people’ and ‘passionate about technology’. Those two elements define our approach towards every aspect of our business, and it’s within those that we find one of our core areas of interest: learning. Every day presents a new opportunity to learn, but a conscious approach to ensuring our team continues to learn takes commitment. So earlier this year, we launched the 4i Breakfast Club.
Breakfast Club began as "4th Sessions"
Going back a few years, our breakfast club originally began as “4th sessions” - an opportunity to connect with each other, away from our inboxes, enjoy breakfast together and learn something new. Walking into the Great Boardroom, you’d see bright eyed faces with Legado-caffeine-fueled smiles. The team’s enthusiastic attendance was rewarded by the smell of bacon, chocolate chip muffins and the promise of walking out even more inspired, with insightful knowledge imparted and amazing ideas shared. For example, SUFM, one of our clients, asked us if we knew anything about handicapped users. We didn’t. And that’s why we organised a 4th session that focused on the topic: “How to make apps user friendly for blind people.” The session provided really helpful insights that we were able to share with the client. When Babylonstoren first contacted 4i, and asked if we would make an app for them, we hosted a 4th session to throw ideas around of what could possibly go into such an app, and a lot of what is in the app today came from seeds planted in that very first meeting.
The topics varied a lot, but the goal was always the same - to brainstorm, share and learn
Learning Over Breakfast
The topics varied a lot, but the goal was always the same - to brainstorm, share and learn, so that we can grow our collective skill set as a company and come up with ideas that can be used in multiple projects. When Checkers came to us for advice on launching their app, we hosted a 4th session that enabled us to look at unique ways to promote a mobile application, both online and offline.
The Breakfast Club in 2017
When 2017 rolled around, we committed to relaunching the 4th sessions, but renamed it to: the 4i Breakfast Club. We kicked off our first session on the last Friday in January, discussing the Apple Watch and all the possibilities around what we could do that would add value to users and to brands. The 4i Breakfast Club meets bi-monthly, on Friday mornings, so everyone has a chance to do some research ahead of time and bring their own ideas to the gathering. Occasionally we invite external speakers to facilitate a session, or share something that they may be an expert on.
The Breakfast Club sessions helps us to collectively raise the bar of excellence throughout 4i, by researching, sharing and discussing great software
Breakfast Club Begets Excellence
As one of our company cornerstones, excellence is not just a standard we aspire towards, but a habit we curate and commit to. The Breakfast Club sessions helps us to collectively raise the bar of excellence throughout 4i, by researching, sharing and discussing great software, features, designs or ways in which applications are doing a great job at solving business or user problems. Our Breakfast Club begets excellence in a way that empowers us to help our clients achieve even more, and increase the value we’re able to deliver to our clientele. Of course, accompanied by delicious bacon rolls and excellent coffee, these early morning meetups are a great way for all of us to catch up, share ideas, ignite the fuel and passion that we have for building great mobile products and raising the bar of excellence in everything that we do.
